Commentary
This token was struck for the peace signed in 1679 with the Emperor, the Elector of Brandenburg and the King of Denmark. In addition to a large series of tokens of Louis XIV (F. 12684-12694), for the same subject, namely, the annexation of Bar to France, this reverse is found on a token of the second provostship of Auguste Robert de Pommereu, provost of the merchants of Paris (F. 3632-3634) and on a token of the Commissioners of the Poor of Jean de Laleu, alderman in 1691 (F. 3193). All these tokens are dated 1680 and have the same reverse. We find an explanation in the work of Affry de la Monnoye, op. cit. p.295, taken from the Mercure de France of 1680: XIII For the city “Guardons, trumpets, muskets and several other instruments of war are tied with a scarf covered with fleurs-de-lis with these words: FECIT VICTORIA NODVM
