Commentary

450 lots are on offer at the CGB Numismatique Paris Live Auction – 2 January 2018, from French assignats, Banque de France and Trésor banknotes to emergency issuances and numerous world banknotes.

The sale starts with a nice set of issuances from the 18th and 19th centuries, including a rare French billet de Monoye (lot 4180001) and a few unusual assignats (lots 4180003 and 4180011).

The Banque de France banknote section is one of the prominent parts of this Live Auction and is made up of 185 lots, thus illustrating most existing types. Two exceptional banknotes are on offer, a Colbert 500-Franc proof banknote (lot 4180083) and a Renaissance 500-Franc proof banknote (lot 4180188). You will also be pleased to find a very fine Flameng 5000-Franc banknote of a quality that has become rare (lot 4180109). The freshness of the Noir 20-Franc banknote issued on July 7th, 1874 (lot 4180036) should also attract your attention. Collectors of proof and specimen banknotes will be happy to find more than 20 banknotes, among which a Luc Olivier Merson 50-Franc proof banknote (lot 4180052) and a Terre et Mer 5000-Franc specimen banknote (lot 41800118).

A few Trésor issuances are also on offer, including a rare Algeria 500-Franc banknote (lot 4180206) and a Drapeau 1000-Franc banknote (lot 4180215).

A dozen other issuances (Nécessités, Régie des Chemins de Fer, Bons de Solidarité, Division Leclerc and Croiseur École d’Application Jeanne d’Arc) end this French banknote section of the sale. Among these, you’ll find a particularly interesting series of ten specimen banknotes of the Régie des Chemins de Fer des Territoires Occupés (lot 4180224).

This Live Auction sale continues with a fine selection of world banknotes. The African continent is especially well-represented, notably with a 1000-Franc banknote issued for Brazzaville (Afrique Française Libre) (lot 4180233) and a 500-Franc specimen banknote (B.C.E.A.O.) for Mali (lot 4180309). Other outstanding lots in this sale include a Banque de l’Indochine 500-Franc banknote issued in 1898 for New Caledonia (lot 4180353) and two superb 5000-Franc banknotes for the Comoros (lots 4180288 et 4180289). As for Northern Europe, a beautiful 1000-Markkaa issued in 1918 for Finland will no doubt catch your eye. Finally, it is worth mentioning a nice selection of specimen banknotes for the Banque de l’Indochine (lots 4180422 and 4180359).
