Historical background

LIMOUSIN - VISCOUNTCY OF LIMOGES - JOHN III OF BRITTANY

(1301-1339)

Jean III (1286-1341) is the son of Arthur II of Brittany. His father instituted him viscount of Limoges in 1301, then he became duke of Brittany in 1305, but died in 1312. Jean III le Bon therefore in turn became duke of Brittany. In 1314, he gave the Viscountcy of Limoges to his brother Guy VII (1314-1317). After Guy's death, he instituted the viscountcy as a dower for the benefit of his wife Isabelle de Castille. But Isabelle died in 1328. He remarried Joan of Savoy in 1329 and offered Limoges as a dower to his second wife. He recognized Philippe VI de Valois as King of France and was wounded at the Battle of Cassel. He became Earl of Richmond in 1333 and paid homage to Edward III of England for this earldom. Without an heir, he married his niece Jeanne to Charles de Blois and died in Caen in 1341 after having supported Philippe VI in the Hundred Years War which began.
