Historical background

LIMOUSIN - SAINT-MARTIAL'S ABBEY OF LIMOGES

(12th century)

Saint-Martial is the first bishop of Limoges at the end of the 3rd century, mandated by Saint-Denis according to the hagiographic tradition. The abbey was a Cluniac foundation and came under the Order. She often opposed the viscounts of Limoges who imitated her coinage. After the Maison de Bretagne took possession, the coinage of the abbey of Saint-Martial lost its importance. It is not mentioned in the ordinance of 1315.
