Reverse description : Dominant la mer et quatre navires, une boussole sur un autel aux armes de Lille, liée par un trait à l'étoile polaire dans le ciel. A droite de l'autel, des ballots à terre.
Reverse translation : D'ici, elle est régie pour diriger.

Historical background


LILLE

The city of Lille has been mentioned in texts since the 11th century. Fortified, it was taken by Philippe Auguste in 1214, by Philippe le Bel in 1297, then it passed to the Dukes of Burgundy after the marriage of Marguerite, daughter of Louis de Male with Philippe le Hardi. Philippe le Bon made it one of his favorite residences and founded the Order of the Golden Fleece there. It then belonged to the Habsburgs and was part of the Spanish Netherlands. Louis XIV seized it during the War of Devolution in 1667 and had it fortified by Vauban. Taken by Prince Eugene in 1708, it was returned to France during the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713.
