The coinage of Genoa is anonymous between 1140 and 1339. From this date we have coins with the names of the doges, in the first place, Simon Boccanegra (1339-1345). From the 12th century the Italian cities, Pisa, Amalfi and Genoa control the western Mediterranean trade accompanying the Reconquista in Spain.
