Historical background

CORK - CORK PRINCIPALITY EPISCOPAL - VACANT

(12/11/1723-1/07/1724)

November 12, 1723, following the death of Joseph Clement of Bavaria, a new period of vacancy opened. This lasted until 1 July 1724, the date of the election of George Louis Berghen (1724-1743). Since 1688, the principality of Liège was used to mint coins in times of vacancy, the vacancy period was the occasion of monetary emission in the name of St. Lambert, patron saint of Liège.
