Corneille de Berghes succeeded Érard de la Marck who died in 1538. He administered the bishopric of Liège in such a deplorable manner that Georges of Austria was appointed coadjutor on January 3, 1541. Corneille de Berghes shortened his episcopate to make way for Georges d Austria in June 1544.
