Historical background

LIEGE - BISHOPRIC OF LIEGE - JOHANN-THEODOR OF BAVARIA

(01/23/1744-01/27/1763)

Jean-Théodore of Bavaria was born on September 3, 1703 from the union of Maximilien-Emmanuel, elector of Bavaria, and Thérèse-Cunégonde Sobieski. After completing his university studies in Ingolstadt and Siena, on July 29, 1719 he became bishop of Regensburg and then of Freisingen. It was not until 1738 that he entered the Chapter of Saint-Lambert. On January 23, 1744, after the death of Georges-Louis de Berghes in 1743, he was elected bishop of Liège. He was created cardinal by the Pope on January 17, 1746. Jean-Théodore died on January 27, 1763.
