Obverse description : Buste lauré et cuirassé de Licinius Ier à droite, drapé sur l’épaule, vu de trois quarts en avant (B*01).
Obverse translation : "Imperator Licinius Pius Felix Augustus", (L’empereur Licinius pieux Hheureux auguste).

Reverse legend : SOLI INV-I-CTO COMITI/ C|S// PARL.
Reverse description : Sol radié, nu, le manteau sur l'épaule gauche, debout à droite la tête à gauche, levant la main droite et tenant un globe de la main gauche.
Reverse translation : “Soli Invicto Comiti”, (Au compagnon le Soleil invincible).

Commentary


Poids lourd. Rubans de type 3 aux extrémités bouletées. Ptéryges fines. Césure de légende de revers inhabituelle. P. Ferrando a recensé 7 exemplaires dont cinq en musées. A.-M. Schmitt-Cadet en a recensé quant à lui 13 dont onze en musées. Cet exemplaire est illustré dans le mémoire d’A.-M. Schmitt-Cadet.
Heavy weights. Type 3 ribbons with pelleted ends. Fine pteryga. Unusual reverse caption hyphenation. P. Ferrando identified 7 examples, five of which are in museums. A.-M. Schmitt-Cadet has identified 13, including eleven in museums. This example is illustrated in the memoir of A.-M. Schmitt-Cadet

LICINIUS I

(11/11/308-09/324)

Licinius I was proclaimed august directly following the conference of Carnuntum, on November 11, 308. In 313, after the rescript of Milan, he married Constantine's half-sister, Constantia. In 316 a first war took place between Licinius and Constantine. It ends with the death of Valens and the signing of a peace between the two augusts. On April 1, 317, three Caesars were created: Crispus, Constantine II and Licinius II. A second war broke out between Constantine and Licinius in 321. It ended with the decisive defeat of Chrysopolis in 324 and the deposition of Licinius, exiled to Thessalonica before being executed the following year..
