Commentary

I), CISIAMBOS.CATTOS.VERCOBRETO (cl. II) ou seulement ARCANTODAN (cl. III) (cf. DT. 2483-2485).

.
The legends of the eagle or flower semi-circular coins are normally well known, but this example seems to pose some problems. This type of obverse with CISIAMBOS on the obverse is supposed to have SEMISSOS.LEXOVIO.PVBLICA (cl. I), CISIAMBOS.CATTOS.VERCOBRETO (cl. II) or only ARCANTODAN (cl. III) (cf. DT. 2483-2485). The reverse is overstruck or heavily trefoiled, but the clearly visible legend (...)ASEAR(...) does not correspond to any legend listed for this series of semi-circular coins! The bga_335595 already allowed us to state that class III with the portrait has a long legend MAVPENNOS.ARCANTODA normally assigned to coins with the flower. This example with a new, still incomplete legend largely calls into question our knowledge of this series with the portrait, of which quality examples (allowing an epigraphic study) are too rare!

Historical background

LEXOVII (Area of Lisieux)

(2nd - 1st century BC)

The Lexovians, a small Celtic people, had Noviomagus (Lisieux) as their main oppidum. Their territory was bounded by the hills of the Perche and the sea. According to Strabo, the Lexovians would have been excellent traders, exchanging tin from Brittany and lead from Cornwall for wine and oil from Italy. They are cited several times by Caesar in his Commentaries. The Lexovian contingent for the relief army sent to Alesia was included in the twenty thousand men counted for all the peoples along the ocean and "who call themselves Armoricans". However, the Lexovians do not belong to the Armorican group. Caesar (BG. III, 9, 11, 17, 29). Kruta: 351, 366.
