Commentary

Although anepigraph, this bronze fits perfectly into the CISIAMBOS bronze series, with exactly the same type of reverse. Series 466 “anepigraph bronzes from the Lexovii derived from the bronze of Cisiambos” brings together two varieties of reverses; the first corresponds to our bronze and the second has a lion without the spike, comparable to the DT. 2492

Historical background

LEXOVII (Area of Lisieux)

(2nd - 1st century BC)

The Lexovians, a small Celtic people, had Noviomagus (Lisieux) as their main oppidum. Their territory was bounded by the hills of the Perche and the sea. According to Strabo, the Lexovians would have been excellent traders, exchanging tin from Brittany and lead from Cornwall for wine and oil from Italy. They are cited several times by Caesar in his Commentaries. The Lexovian contingent for the relief army sent to Alesia was included in the twenty thousand men counted for all the peoples along the ocean and "who call themselves Armoricans". However, the Lexovians do not belong to the Armorican group. Caesar (BG. III, 9, 11, 17, 29). Kruta: 351, 366.
