Historical background

LEUCI (Area of Toul)

(1st century BC)

The beginning of the coinage which had been fixed until the middle of the 2nd century BC could only begin around 75 BC. Simone Scheers had isolated in the Treatise more than 20 different varieties for Class I. For class II quarter staters, there are 3 varieties. Our example belongs to the 2nd variety and not to the 3rd, as described in the work of Simone Scheers of the Médaillier de Lyon. According to the work of the same author, the distribution map is wide, but seems to be concentrated around the oppidum of Boviolles, in the departments of Meuse and Vosges. The attribution of the Indian head gossip series to the Leuques is certain. Surface finds and treasures are very numerous in the departments of Meuse and Vosges. The orientation of the dies of these cast coins seems constant at 3 or 9 o'clock. The Leuques are only mentioned once by Caesar in the Gallic Wars (BG, I, 40).
