Commentary

example from the Franklin medallist, which honors François I by Jean Clouet: Jean Clouet, who appears on the list of the king's painters in 1516, is a Belgian portraitist whose precision was then matched only by that of Holbein. Before creating the large portrait of François I, he made a preparatory drawing with the delicate fidelity that was the prerogative of 16th-century French portraitists. The memory of Jean Clouet quickly faded. His work was confused with that of his son François Clouet. It was not until our century that he was given the rank of first great French Renaissance master. This painting is kept at the Louvre Museum in Paris. Medal sculpted by Anthony Jones. Theoretically, the crab mark is supposed to indicate a fineness of 800 thousandths
