LEO IV THE KHAZAR and CONSTANTINE VI

Leo IV is the son of Constantine V and his first wife, a Khazar princess. Associated with the throne on June 6, 751, he succeeded his father on September 14, 775. Leo IV was married to Irene, who took an important ascendancy in the affairs of the Empire. Constantin VI, their son was proclaimed august on April 24, 776. When Leo IV died after five years of reign on September 8, 780, Irene was appointed regent for her minor son, ten years old.
