Commentary

From Marcian onwards, the number of Gs in the reverse legend no longer indicates the number of Augustes, but is the mark of the plural. Type 3 ribbons with rounded ends. Georges Depeyrot recorded 78 examples for this type and this workshop.

Historical background

LEO I

(7/02/457-18/01/474)

Leo I (411-474) was an officer of Dacian origin. He succeeded Marcian in 457, tried to reform the army. He counterbalanced the influence of the Germans by a massive entry of Isaurians, including Zeno, his future son-in-law who married Ariadne, the eldest daughter of the emperor and Verina in 467. Leon fell seriously ill in 473. He then chose his little -son, Leo II, to succeed him. Leo I died the following year and Zeno wasted no time in seizing power by joining forces with his son, Leo II, before ousting him..
