Commentary
This is the first comprehensive work devoted to the various elements of the imperial monetary bust from Augustus to the end of the Western Empire. The work has 56 chapters and covers these elements: crowns, clothes, weapons, insignia, attributes, postures and gestures. Each element has been studied from its origin to the end of its evolution, with a discussion of its interpretation which can vary over time. This research draws on literary sources and on contemporary figurative monuments. Thus, this work will appeal not only to numismatists but also to specialists of Roman Iconography. The work contains many drawings and 266 plates of photographs showing enlargement of coins and of the art objects to which they can be compared, such as statues, busts, reliefs, engraved gems, ivories and paintings. The scope of this work has led us to publish it in three volumes. The first has 23 chapters and 332 pages. The second volume 436 and the third 45 pages and 266 plates with 3500 illustrations, complete the work.
