Historical background

LAON (LAUDUNO CLOATO) - Aisne

(7th century)

The Laon mint, which minted Merovingian coins, is located on the border of the Thierry and Clotaire domains. It is part of the province of Reims. The most important emissions took place between 578 and the end of the century. Of the few known types, those of the SIGILAICVS and BAVDVLFVS coins date from the beginning of the 7th century (c. 620/640). After these two coiners, the workshop will resume its monetary activity only during the first period of the reign of Charlemagne. (Cf. Jean Lafaurie, Numismatic Days of Laon, BSFN June 1998).
