Historical background

LANGUEDOC - VISCOUNTCY OF ALBI - ANONYMOUS

(12th century)

The reverse of some Albi deniers could evoke the bet that existed between the count and the bishop of Albi. Pons had taxed the receipts of the Mint when he married Majore de Carcassonne. The coinage is perhaps directly inspired by the denarius of Raymond Pons, Count of Toulouse in the 10th century. The coinage is impoverished after 1212 at the beginning of the crusade against the Albigenses. The papal legate had settled in Albi to fight against heresy. The city was attached to the kingdom in 1249.
