Historical background

Languedoc - Viscount of Carcassonne - BERNARD ATON IV TRENCAVEL

(1083-1129)

The coinage of Carcassonne begins at the end of the tenth century to 980-1000. Beziers viscounts were also viscounts of Carcassonne since the marriage of Raymond I. (1002-1012) with Garsinde, Viscountess Beziers and Agde. Raymond Trencavel II, was the last Viscount of Carcassonne and Beziers from 1209 to 1247, in full Cathar heresy. Dispossessed of Carcassonne by Simon de Montfort in 1209, he gave both viscounties the king of France, Louis IX, in 1247.
