Les négociations de paix pour mettre fin à la guerre de Succession d’Autriche s’ouvrent en mars 1748 tandis que le maréchal de Saxe assiège Maastricht. Sous la pression, un armistice est conclu et la paix est enfin signée le 18 octobre 1748 à Aix-la-Chapelle. Cette paix sera décevante pour tous. La France, pourtant victorieuse, restitue les conquêtes françaises.
