Historical background

LANGUEDOC - COUNTY OF TOULOUSE - RAYMOND V

(1148-1194)

Raymond IV (1134-1194), Count of Toulouse and Saint-Gilles, succeeded Alphonse Jourdain in 1148. He was taking part in the Second Crusade when he inherited the county. He granted the consular regime to the city of Toulouse, reinforced the county authority and had to fight against his neighbors. He was obliged to pay homage to Henry II, King of England (1154-1189), Duke of Aquitaine, Count of Poitiers, Anjou and Maine in 1173. At the end of his reign the schism developed Cathar which was to culminate with the principate of Raymond VI of Toulouse (1194-1222).
