Historical background

Languedoc - COUNTY OF TOULOUSE - Alphonse de Poitiers

(1249-1271)

Alphonse (1220-1271), second brother of St. Louis was also Count of Poitou, Auvergne and Toulouse by his marriage with Joan, daughter of Raymond VII. He succeeded the latter in 1249 and introduced the Châtel tournaments Montreuil Bonin from 1251. He wanted to perhaps recall rights at a time when St. Louis was a prisoner in the Holy Land recalling that it is "Alphonse, Count, son of the King". The cross surmounting the Châtel tournaments has been variously described. We believe it is the cross of Languedoc.
