Historical background

LANGRES - BISHOPRIC OF LANGRES - ANONYMOUS. Immobilization in the name of Louis IV d'Outremer or Transmarinus

Langres, bishopric since the 3rd century, had received the right to mint coins from Charles II the Bald in 874, a right later confirmed by Charles the Fat in 887 and Eudes of France in 889. The mint seems to have been active under Louis IV d'Outremer, the type of which was probably immobilized and then imitated. The denarius in the name of Louis, king, is an adaptation of the Carolingian type. The bishops minted in their name from the second half of the 12th century, such as Guy I of Rochefort (1250-1268).
