Historical background

LA MARCHE - COUNTY OF LA MARCHE - HUGH X

(1208-1249)

The history of Marche County is complex. The county of Basse Marche had been under English domination since 1177. In 1203, at the request of Philippe Auguste, Eleanor of Aquitaine restored the county to Hugues IX (1199-1204-1208). His son Hugues X de Lusignan succeeded him in 1208. He married in 1220, the widow of King Jean-sans-Terre (+1216), Isabelle d'Angoulême. He thus became Count of Angoulême. His son, Hugues XI le Brun, inherited the county of Angoulême on his mother's death in 1246 and the county of La Marche in 1249. He was thus the half-brother of King Henry III Plantagenêt..
