Historical background

WALKING - THE COUNTY MARKET - Hugues X

(1208-1249)

History of the County of Marche is complex. County Basse Marche had been under British rule since 1177. In 1203, at the request of Philip Augustus, Eleanor of Aquitaine County restored to Hugh IX (1199-1204-1208). His son Hugues X de Lusignan succeeded him in 1208. He married in 1220, the widow of King John Lackland (1216) Isabella of Angoulême. He became Count of Angoulême. His son, Hugh XI Brown, inherited the county of Angouleme at the death of his mother in 1246 and the County of Marche in 1249. It was thus half-brother of King Henry III Plantagenet.
