Historical background

THE CONVENTION

(21/09/1792-26/10/1795)

Following the Terror, collective drownings of prisoners were organized in Nantes by Carrier from December 1793. Bonaparte recaptured Toulon from the English on December 19. The "infernal columns" ravage the Vendée in January 1794 (15,000 dead). Robespierre had Fabre d'Églantine arrested, then attacked the Hébertists and the Dantonists who were executed in March and April 1794. Condorcet committed suicide on April 7. On April 14, the ashes of Jean-Jacques Rousseau are transferred to the Pantheon. On May 7, Robespierre pronounces the speech on the Supreme Being whose solemn feast will be celebrated on June 8. Lavoisier, as farmer general, was executed on June 10 ("The Republic does not need scholars"). The "Great Terror" was established on June 10, 1794. Jourdan defeated the Austrians at Fleurus on June 26. On 9 Thermidor, Robespierre was arrested, along with the members of the Committee of Public Safety. Robespierre, Saint-Just, Couthon and Lebas were executed on 10 Thermidor. It's the end of the Terror.
