Historical background

KINGDOM OF SERBIA - ALEXANDER OBRENOVIC

(1889-1903)

Alexandre Obrénovitch is the son of Milan IV who abdicated following the establishment of a parliamentary monarchy. In 1894, with the support of the radicals, the king restored his personal power and the previous conservative constitution by a coup d'etat which earned him strong opposition. In 1903, the king and his controversial wife were assassinated by a military conspiracy.
