Obverse description : Buste casqué, diadémé et cuirassé de Justinien Ier de face avec pendilia, tenant de la main droite un globe crucigère et de la gauche un bouclier ; dans le champ à droite, une croix.
Obverse translation : “Dominus Noster Iustinianus Perpetuus Augustus”, (Notre seigneur Justinien perpétuel auguste).

Poids léger. Le bouclier est orné d’un cavalier galopant à droite. Notre exemplaire appartient à la série la plus lourde des folles frappée entre l’an 12 et l’an 15 (538/539 et 541/542) au 1/12 L..
Lightweight. The shield is decorated with a galloping horseman on the right. Our example belongs to the heaviest series of folles struck between the years 12 and 15 (538/539 and 541/542) at 1/12 L.

Justinian succeeded his uncle Justin in 527 after a co-regency from April 4 to August 1, 527. He reigned with Empress Theodora. The construction of Hagia Sophia was completed under his reign, which marks the height of the Byzantine conquests. Carthage as well as Africa and part of Numidia were reconquered from the Vandals thanks to General Bélisaire. After a century of Vandal domination, Romanism once again reigned over the Mediterranean.
