Exemplaire sur un flan très large et irrégulier, parfaitement centré des deux côtés avec les grènetis visibles. Portrait particulier, bouffi de Justinien Ier. Joli revers. Belle patine marron foncé

Ce type avec la tête gonflée de Justinien Ier fait peut-être référence à la peste que l’empereur attrapa en 542. H. Pottier a relevé des folles avec ce type de visage pour les années 15 et 16 (541/542 et 542/543). Cette variété semble beaucoup plus rare que les folles avec la tête normale.

Justinian succeeded his uncle Justin in 527 after a co-regency from April 4 to August 1, 527. He reigned with Empress Theodora. The construction of Hagia Sophia was completed under his reign, which marks the height of the Byzantine conquests. Carthage as well as Africa and part of Numidia were reconquered from the Vandals thanks to General Bélisaire. After a century of Vandal domination, Romanism once again reigned over the Mediterranean.
