Obverse description : Buste diadémé, drapé et cuirassé de Justinien Ier à droite, vu de trois quarts en avant (A'a) ; diadème perlé.
Obverse translation : “Dominus Noster Iustinianus Perpetuus Augustus”, (Notre seigneur Justinien perpétuel auguste).

Reverse legend : B// CON À L'EXERGUE.
Reverse description : M accostée d’une étoile à six rais et d’une croisette, surmontée d’une croisette ; entre les jambages B.

Commentary


Le paludamentum est timbré d’une étoile qui a la forme d’un chrisme archaïque. Au revers, l’étoile ressemble au sceau de Salomon et la croix est grecque.
The paludamentum is stamped with a star that has the shape of an archaic chrism. On the reverse, the star resembles the seal of Solomon and the cross is Greek.

JUSTINIAN I

(1/08/527-14/11/565)

Justinian succeeded his uncle Justin in 527 after a co-regency from April 4 to August 1, 527. He reigned with Empress Theodora. The construction of Hagia Sophia was completed under his reign, which marks the height of the Byzantine conquests. Carthage as well as Africa and part of Numidia were reconquered from the Vandals thanks to General Bélisaire. After a century of Vandal domination, Romanism once again reigned over the Mediterranean. Belisarius then attacked the Ostrogoths and took Rome on December 9, 536. Theodora died in 545. Justinian reigned another twenty years. Childless, his nephew Justin II succeeded him..
