Justin I, illiterate ethnic Macedonian, was a brilliant military leader during the reigns of Zeno and Anastasius. At the time of his accession, he was commander in chief of "excubitores" (guards) of Constantinople. He succeeded Anastasius and associations to power his nephew Justinian, who became co-emperor 4 April 527. Justin died on 1 August.
