Commentary

Office 0 is one of those that strikes Julia Domna but whose bulk of production will be devoted to Macrinus.
It should be noted that the portrait of the Empress uses the hairstyle with heavy locks and the small diadem but does not place the bust on a crescent moon..
The attribution of the series to Shamash in Emesa is more than likely, but the discovery of a presentation program that would confirm this would be welcome..
The emissions are distributed into pharmacies, an improper term because these are certainly not pharmacies in the sense of a distribution of production.. Indeed, some letters or symbols are found on a large number of examples, others on a handful: we should therefore rather think about the source of funding, probably distributed between different families or local institutions..
Note that the sigmas are engraved in C.
In the TSP database maintained by Michel Prieur, fourteen examples are now listed, four in museums, in Paris, Fonds Général, at the American Numismatic Society, ex Newell, in Oxford and in Berne, ex Righetti. Our example, which comes from the so-called Turkey 1930 find, is 0995_005

Historical background

JULIA DOMNA

(+217)

Augusta

Julia Domna is from Emesa in Syria and daughter of the High Priest of Baal of Emesa. Septimius Severus married her around 180. She gave him two sons, Caracalla, born in Lyon in 188, and Géta, born in 189. She was proclaimed Augusta in 194, accompanied the Emperor on his travels and therefore received the title of " Mother of the camps". During the Brittany expedition, she was regent in Rome. After the death of Septimius Severus, she received new honors, Mother of the Senate and Mother of the Country, as well as the titles of Pia Felix (pious and happy). In 212, Geta was assassinated by his brother in the arms of Domna. During Caracalla's Germanic and Parthian expeditions, Domna remained in Rome. After the death of her son, she is exiled by Macrinus and dies soon after..
