Commentary

For this type, Mr. Crawford noted an estimate of less than ten coins for the right and less than twelve coins for the reverse. This denarius is in fact one of the rarest coins from this period. D. Sear points out that this is the first appearance of Caesar's name on coinage, more than thirty years before the birth of the Dictator. Among the treasures, only fourteen examples were found, coming from the deposits of Banzi (7 ex.) Riccia (2 ex.), Syracuse (1 ex.), Berchidda (1 ex.) and Monte Condruzzo (1 ex. .)

Historical background

JULIA

(129 BC)

The Gens Julia is a very old patrician family which claims to descend from Ascanius, son of Aeneas. Their ancestry therefore goes back to the goddess Venus. The most illustrious member of this gens is Julius Caesar.
