Historical background

JUDEA - GOVERNORS ROMANS

(9-62 AD)

After 6 AD when Herod Archelaus was banished, Augustus appointed governors to administer the Judeée of equestrian rank. Between 9 and 62, these procurators or prefects (Claudius) struck small local currencies (of Prutah). The Best known among them is Pontius Pilate, governor of 26-36 that left condemn and execute Jesus. The latest to hit procurator Porcius Festus currency was during the reign of Nero (59/60-62).
