Historical background

JUDAEA - ASKALON

(1st - 2nd century AD)

The city of Ascalon (or Ashkelon in Hebrew) is one of the oldest in the region and one of the most flourishing cities on the Phoenician coast. After having been destroyed by the Assyrians, the city was rebuilt under Persian domination, then fell under that of Macedonians. The city was destroyed again in 300 BC. Rebuilt, it was a permanent stake between the Seleucids and the Lagids. It then passes under the domination of the Hasmoneans before falling under the thumb of the Romans in the 1st century BC where it was a prosperous autonomous city..
