Historical background


JUDAEA - ROMAN GOVERNORS

(9-62 AD)

After 6 AD when Herod Archelaus was banished, Augustus appointed governors to administer Judea of equestrian rank. Between 9 and 62, these procurators or prefects (under Claudius) minted small local coins (Plutahs). The best known of them is Pontius Pilate, governor from 26 to 36 who allowed Jesus to be condemned and executed. The last procurator to mint coins was Porcius Festus during the reign of Nero (59/60-62).
