Historical background

JUDAEA - HERODIAN KINGDOM - HEROD ARCHEALAUS

(4 BC - AD)

Herod Archelaus is the son of King Herod the Great and his Samaritan wife Malthace. After Herod's death in 6 BC, he had to travel to Rome to receive the investiture of Augustus and was not enthroned king, but only ethnarch of Judea, Samaria and Idumea. Antipas, his brother received Perea and Galilee as tetrarch while Herod Philip their half-brother received Bethany and Trachoniditis, the royal title being removed. After nine years of reign, Herod Archelaus, for his mismanagement was dethroned and sent into exile in Vienne Gaul. Judea became a Roman province.
