La monnaie du Japon commémore le programme de train à grande vitesse japonais appelé Shinkansen. Initié en 1959, la première ligne entre Tokyo et Osaka est inaugurée en 1964 à l’occasion des Jeux Olympiques de Tokyo. Depuis de nouvelles lignes ont été construites et l’expansion du réseau se poursuit.La ligne Shinkansen Akita est une ligne reliant les villes de Morioka à Akita. En raison de son gabarit plus étroit et de sa vitesse limitée à 130 km, cette ligne est classée comme ligne “mini-Shinkansen”.
