Commentary

Le gros ou grosso (Matapan) fut créé à l'instigation d'Henri Dandolo (1192-1205, 41ème doge) qui fut à l'instigation de la prise de Constantinople par les Croisés le 17 juillet 1203. Le sequin ou zecchino d'orofut frappé pour la première par Jean Dandolo en 1284 à la Zecca. La Zecca est la tour qui se trouve sur la place Saint-Marc en face du Palais des Doges, que l'on peut voir encore aujourd'hui, et où les monnaies étaient fabriquées. Ce type de pièce est directement inspiré du monnayage byzantin. Pour cette raison, nous considérons que le droit est le Christ en majesté.

Francesco Foscari was elected at the age of 49 on April 15, 1423 in preference to Admiral Pietro Loredano. Thanks to him the Republic of Venice knows its longest reign, more than 34 years, as well as the greatest territorial expansion of its history, bringing together under a single legislation all Veneto and Friuli.
