Historical background

ITALY - PAPAL STATES - INNOCENT XI (Benedetto Odescalchi)

(21/09/1676-12/08/1689)

Benedict Odescalchi was born in Como in 1611. He was elected and consecrated pope in Rome under the name of Innocent XI. On numerous occasions, he opposed Louis XIV, who ended up seizing the Comtat Venaissin. His pontificate was quite austere and he gave several laws against the luxury of Roman ladies. He died in Rome on August 12, 1689.
