Historical background

ITALY - PAPAL STATES - GREGORY XVI (Bartolomeo Alberto Cappellari)

(02/02/1831-01/06/1846)

Successor of Pope Pius VIII, Gregory XVI was elected pope on February 2, 1831. He is the author of the Triumph of the Holy Church in which he supports papal infallibility and the sovereignty of the pope over the Papal States. He also opposes Masonic efforts against the influence of the Church and believes he has discovered a plot to undermine the papacy. During his pontificate, he defended the Papal States against the attacks of various revolutionary movements, and was at the origin of a revival of the Missions. He died on June 1, 1846.
