Historical background

ITALY - PAPAL STATES - CLEMENT XIV (Giovanni Ganganelli)

(05/19/1769-09/22/1774)

He succeeds Clement XIII when the papacy is in a difficult situation both religiously and politically. Under pressure from European powers including France, he abolished the Society of Jesus in 1773. This will allow the Papacy to recover Avignon occupied by French troops since 1768. Erudite and renowned for integrity, Clement XIII is also a protector of Jews and a friend of science.
