Benedict XIV (1675-1758) succeeded Clement XII after a Sede Vacante of more than six months (February 6 - August 17, 1740). He was a great builder. He restored many monuments in Rome and Bologna where he was from. During the jubilee year in 1750, he excommunicated the Freemasons by the bull "Providas". Benedict XIV, a great scholar, established the ritual for beatifications and canonizations. He was also the defender of the Indians in America who suffered from bad treatment..
