Historical background

ITALY - NEAPOLITAN REPUBLIC

(23/01/1799-19/06/1799)

Occupied by the armies of the French Revolution in January 1799, Naples became a new republic whose constitution was modeled on the French model. The frail Parthenopean Republic is nevertheless obliged to capitulate on June 19, 1799 before the troops of Cardinal Ruffo. Nelson's arrival on June 25 precipitates atrocities against the French garrison and the Republicans who are massacred while Ferdinand IV is restored to his throne.
