Commentary
The conditions of issue of Modena coins (fineness and weight) were not known before the publication of Arnaud Clairand's article in the Revue Numismatique in 1997. During the War of the Spanish Succession, the French occupied several towns in Piedmont. Modena surrendered on July 31, 1702. From the end of 1703, the creation of a mint was considered in Modena. This mint struck billon and copper coins in the name of Louis XIV in 1704 and 1705.
