Historical background

ITALY - MILAN - FIRST REPUBLIC

(1250-1310)

Saint-Ambrose (340-397) is the tutelary saint of Milan, of which he was the bishop from 374 to his death. He opposed Symmachus, the pagans and the maintenance of the altar of Victory in the Senate in 384. He baptized Saint Augustine. In the 13th century, Milan was the center of a struggle between the Torriani (Guelphs) and the Viconsti (Ghibellines). In 1311 the Visconti triumphed and dominated the city until 1450.
