Médaille très intéressante, avec de beaux reliefs et une agréable patine brune

Commentary

Cette médaille est à rapprocher d’un exemplaire avec le même revers, conservé à la BN. Ce dernier est considéré comme une variante de la médaille de Louis XI, avec la reproduction exacte du buste de Louis XI par Laurana au droit, associé à notre revers. Bien que le revers soit daté de 1469, ce serait un ouvrage du XVIe siècle ?
Notre médaille serait donc un surmoulage d’une médaille de Laurana, réalisé à la fin du XVe ou au XVIe siècles, mais le droit ne semble pas recensé, car il ne s’agit pas de Louis XI ?

Francesco Laurana, ou Franjo Vranjanin, né à Vrana (actuelle Zadar, Croatie) vers 1430, et mort à Avignon en 1502, est un sculpteur, médailleur et architecte italien.

L'ordre de Saint-Michel est un ordre de chevalerie, fondé à Amboise le 1er août 1469 par Louis XI, sous le nom d'« Ordre et aimable compagnie de monsieur saint Michel ». Les membres de l'ordre de Saint-Michel se disaient « chevaliers de l'ordre du Roi », alors que les chevaliers de l'ordre du Saint-Esprit s'intitulaient « chevaliers des ordres du Roi ». Son siège était établi à l'abbaye du Mont-Saint-Michel..
This medal is similar to a example with the same reverse, preserved at the National Library. The latter is considered a variant of the medal of Louis XI, with the exact reproduction of the bust of Louis XI by Laurana on the obverse, associated with our reverse. Although the reverse is dated 1469, it would be a work of the 16th century? Our medal would therefore be an overmolding of a medal by Laurana, made at the end of the 15th or 16th centuries, but the obverse does not seem to be recorded, because it is not Louis XI?
