Commentary
(cf. Universalis).
The use of the hallmark on this copper medal is surprising. It is indeed a copper medal and not a silver medal as the hallmark might suggest. Born in Oneglia, Andrea Doria led a long life as a condottiere, in the service of Innocent VIII, the Duke of Urbino, Ferdinand I of Naples, Giovanni della Rovere, before going to Corsica to put down an insurrection. (cf. Universalis)
