Historical background

ITALY - DUCHY OF MILAN AND OF MANTUA - FRANCESCO II

(1792-1800)

François II (1768-1792) succeeded his father Léopold II who reigned very little (1790-1792). He is Duke of Milan and Mantua on his accession. He lost these regions in 1796-1797 during Bonaparte's first Italian campaign. The Treaty of Campo Formio in 1797 consecrates the role of France in this part of Italy. Bonaparte left for Egypt, the Austrians recover their territories. The second Italian campaign in the spring of 1800 consecrates French hegemony and brought the Milanese into French orbit for more than a decade..
